KTS Recycling Receives Waste to Energy Cap Allocation to Establish Biochar Facility

KTS Recycling is excited to announce a proposal to establish a facility in Dandenong South to process our mattress recycling residue and recovered timber that’s not suitable to mulch.

We are intending to use Earth System’s char maker technology to produce an agricultural grade biochar product. The heat from the process will be used to produce electricity which will be used to power the shredders on the site.

Recycling Victoria has allocated KTS Recycling a waste to energy cap allocation of 15,000 tonnes per annum for this project (vic.gov.au/waste-energy-scheme-operating-licences).

What is biochar?

Biochar is a form of charcoal made by heating organic material (or ‘biomass’) with limited oxygen in a controlled process called pyrolysis. This turns material that would otherwise be a waste product, such as wood chips, leaf litter, or dead plants, into a useful substance that can store away carbon and improve soils.

“Globally, biochar has the potential to remove billions of excess tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year, enhance food production, and regenerate degraded lands” – courtesy of ‘The Char Maker’.

Biochar can be a sustainable and eco-friendly method to convert organic resources into valuable no-fossil fuel carbon products, fostering a circular and regenerative carbon economy.

We will post updates and more information on the progress of this project on the KTS Recycling website in the coming months.
